Ethics, Consent and Data Protection

for user research

Live training session (2.5 hours)

Are you unsure on how to manage participant’s data safely for user research?

This session is for you

How can this training help you?

We simplify what you need to know when it comes to collecting and storing participant's data safely, ethically and in line with data protection in the UK law.

Sometimes this can feel complicated, so we will break it down into simple steps - including what secure folders you need to set up, different types of data you may collect from participants and how to manage it and templates for your Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), privacy notice and consent forms.

We’ll discuss informed consent and making sure your research is ethical.

Who is this training for?

This training is facilitated in a group setting to individuals or teams

This session is helpful for you if you are:

  • Setting up or part of a new user research team

  • In an existing user research team and want to refresh your processes

  • Democratising user research and want to make sure it’s done safely in line with GDPR

  • Freelance and plan on working with clients directly

There will be a mixture of practical delivery, interactive activities and thought-provoking discussions.

It's really important we get this right! Not only is it the law, but ethically, to make sure we are protecting people who take part in research and their privacy. This applies for internal participants too, who may be members of staff.

What’s included?

We’ll cover:

The basics we need to set up before doing any user research

How data protection and privacy works for participating in research (in the UK)

How to store, collect and retain participant data safely

Methods of informed consent, including templates you can use

Discussion on research ethics - topics like collecting fully ‘informed’ consent, collecting sensitive demographic data, taboo subjects, protecting participant anonymity and having observers present in research sessions

The content of the session will be tailored to the needs of your organisation, user groups and team.

You’ll get:

🤝 A scoping call to talk about your team’s needs and setup - we will create your workshop based on this

🤝 Live, interactive training session for 2.5 hours - delivered to your team online or in person

🤝 Practical actions you can put in place straight away, to do research that is ethical, safe and compliant

🤝 Handout of resources and guidance you can refer back to and keep up to date for your team

🤝 Templates for participant consent form, privacy notice and more

🤝 Follow up support and check in call to help you implement actions from this session

This is a live session conducted in a group setting. There's no pressure to be on your camera or to engage in discussions, if you don't feel comfortable.

What people say

Event feedback
“I found it really engaging about a topic that I really needed and wanted to learn more about. The topic could be dry but the session wasn't at all. It is also so valuable hearing examples from others in a safe space.”

Event feedback
“A lot of the stuff you said today, I’ve honestly not seen done. I’ve seen a lot of examples of bad practice so I was really excited to come to that, it was very practical. That’s what I loved about it, you are SO knowledgeable… you have to be sharing this stuff with people! The second I saw this I thought I want to show it to everyone at work. It’s really important and I loved it - thank you!”

Event feedback
“Attending Sophie’s training ethics, consent and data protection for user research training when I first set out on my freelance journey was invaluable. She took a topic that can feel complex and broke it down into clear steps, delivered in a relatable yet rigorous way. I left feeing much more confident to advise clients on this topic and really appreciated the comprehensive resources Sophie provided afterwards that are so helpful to refer back to!”
